About Us

The Starla Center is a community center in Keller for people with disabilities to experience life.

Our Mission

Starla Center is a Community Learning Program owned and operated by a psychologist with over 30 years of experience specializing in teaching people with disabilities.

We offer real-world experiences for people to learn and grow from. This is how we differ from other program providers.

At Starla Center, we practice scripts out in the community. We do not simulate scenarios in a classroom setting because it does not provide any real-world experience for people with disabilities.

Repeated practice of these scenarios creates memory banks of scripts. These memories support positive thinking while improving self-image and confidence.

We aim to help individuals develop the skills needed for a successful adult life.

This includes:

  • Self-care

  • Interpersonal relationships

  • Community participation

  • Maximum level of employment

How We Achieve Our Mission:

Creating Scripts

Human beings have a tendency to magnify their short comings in life and minimize or forget their accomplishments and gifts. People with special needs are no different. In addition, they have been the subject of social stigmas that may have quantified personal short comings. We can shift that mindset by developing scripts. Scripts are a series of plans and events practiced as many times as needed to achieve a concept.

Here is an example: You arrive, walk through the store, pick out an item to buy, pay at the register, get your change and your item, and then leave.

Repeated practice of these scenarios creates memory banks of scripts. These memories support positive thinking while improving self-image and confidence.

At Starla Center, we practice scripts out in the community. We do not simulate scenarios in a classroom setting because it does not provide any real world experience for people with special needs. This is how we differ from most other services for people with special needs.

Person Directed Planning

What is Person Directed Planning?

Person Directed Planning is services and supports to assist persons with developmental disabilities in identifying their life vision and goals, and finding and using services and supports to meet their identified goals with the help of their families or significant others of their choice.

At Starla Center, we utilize Person Directed Planning to help individuals achieve their life vision and goals. Upon enrolling with us, we help each individual determine what their vision and goals are, and develop a plan outlining how we can provide supports to make them a reality.
